In music there are two kinds of written language. There's what we usually call sheet music, and there's guitar tab. The regular sheet music format shows everything necessary about the specific song. It shows you how load to play, which particular notes to hit, and how long to hold them. The guitar tab notation, however, has become increasingly popular with many people, mainly because it doesn't require all the skills that you need to read sheet music.
Many electric guitar players only learn guitar tab, but there are also many guitar players who thank their lucky stars that they took the trouble to learn to read music. The ones that can read sheet music are able to play a lot more sounds and have a better understanding of what they are playing.
When you first start learning electric guitar, you will probably learn the name of each of the guitar strings first (there are six of them). In fact, there are only 7 notes in an octave, but a seasoned player is able to play more notes by understanding how to properly use the fret board.
Next, you should concentrate on how to properly play the notes using the guitar. After that, you should concentrate on how memorizing the various chord shapes, figuring out different ways to pluck and strum, and finally how to use the appropriate amount of pressure to create the desired notes.
As a beginner, you probably shouldn't spend a fortune on buying your first guitar. You just do need to do it! The best option is to simply borrow one, but if you don't have access there are many places that sell inexpensive electric guitars. The choice, then, is to get a second hand one (of better quality) or a cheep first hand one that isn't as good. Get some advice from a guitar playing friend on buying your first guitar, or get some advice from experienced guitarists who are members of one of the online guitar forums.
After you have bought the guitar that you will be player, the first thing to do is practise a lot. This can take weeks or months, and you should concentrate on the basic scales and chords. If you have been fortunate enough be able to borrow one, then this learning experience will only help you decide which guitar you will ultimately buy.
When buying a guitar from an anonymous seller (through a classified ad, for instance), you must be sure to ask how long he has had it and if there has been any damage that has not been properly repaired. When buying a second hand guitar you will need to check whether the neck is warped, how well the pickups work, and check the moving parts like the machine heads and the tremolo arm.
